My Journey as a Social Worker in Madhesh Province Dhanusha, Nepal
-Kaiyum Rain, YSB 25 JAN, 2024
I was born and raised in a small village in Dhanusha District, where I had a simple but happy life. I always had a dream of making a difference in our Province and helping those who are less fortunate than me. That's why I decided to leave my village temporarily in 2014 and pursue my education in social work.
I faced many challenges along the way, both in and out of my journey. I saw the inequalities and injustices that exist in our society, and I felt the need to do something about them. I also had to overcome some health issues, such as Heart Problem that made my life harder. But I didn’t let these obstacles stop me from following my passion. I joined various clubs and organizations that allowed me to participate in community service and social activities. I learned a lot from these experiences, and I also made many friends and mentors who supported me and inspired me.
After completing my SLC (School Leaving Certificate) exam, I was looking forward to enjoying my freedom and exploring new opportunities. But then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world and changed everything. I saw how the pandemic affected the lives and livelihoods of many people, especially the poor and marginalized. I felt the urge to help them in any way I could. I started by organizing relief efforts and distributing food and masks to the needy. I also formed a group called the Pandemic Control and Management Committee (PCMC), which aimed to raise awareness and prevent the spread of the virus.
As the pandemic continued, I realized that I needed to do more than just provide immediate relief. I wanted to create long-term solutions and positive changes in my community and beyond. That’s why I transformed PCMC into “Youth for Service and Change,” a platform for young people to engage in social work and leadership development.Through this platform, I have been involved in various projects and initiatives, such as:
- Conducting leadership training and youth dialogues on topics such as climate change and human rights.
- Participating in SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) conferences and workshops, where I learned about the global challenges and opportunities for development.
- Networking and collaborating with other youth leaders and organizations across Madhesh province and Nepal.
One of the most exciting and rewarding opportunities that I have had as a social /climate worker is joining EU Youth Sounding Board Nepal. This is a program that allows young people to have a voice and influence the policies and actions of the European Union in Nepal. I applied for this program because I wanted to learn more about the EU and its role in Nepal’s development. I also wanted to share my views and suggestions on how the EU can better support the youth and the social sector in Nepal.
I was selected as one of the 25 members of the board, and I underwent physical orientation and leadership training in Kathmandu. I also attended online events and meetings, where I interacted with other board members, EU officials, experts, and the Thematic group of ’Climate change’. I got the opportunity to welcome our new Ambassador, H.E. Veronique LORENZO, to Madhesh Province during her visit. It was her first visit to Madhesh Province, and she interacted with and talked about the situation of Madhesh Province in the Chure sector. I also got the chance to visit different organizations running projects under the support of the European Union.
Being a part of this program has been a great learning experience for me. I have gained new knowledge, skills and connections that will help me in my future endeavors. I am proud to be a member of this board and I look forward to contributing more to this platform. As I aspire to contribute more to Nepal’s social and development sectors, I reflect on the struggles that shaped my journey. I am grateful for the opportunities and support that I have received, and I am humbled by the achievements and recognition that I have earned. But I know that there is still a lot of work to be done and a lot of challenges to be faced. I don’t know where my journey will take me, but I know that I will always be driven by my passion and vision for social work.
I hope that my story will inspire you to follow your dreams and make a positive impact in Nepal. I also hope that you will join me in my mission to create a clean and peaceful society, where everyone can live with dignity and happiness. Thank you for reading my blog and please feel free to leave your comments and feedback. I would love to hear from you and learn from you. May pure minds cultivate a clean society for a brighter future, striving for success in both Deen and Duniya. Be a Social Hero, Embrace Honesty, and Foster Peace.
